KANDLER’S KILLS NOT ENOUGH FOR VCU IN HAMPTON INN FINALE

The short story: Junior Alica Kandler bolstered VCU's offense with 13 kills, but VCU fell to Oakland Saturday at Bowling Green's Hampton Inn Invitational.
 
OPENING VOLLEY
  • Kandler hit .400 on 25 swings and added a pair of blocks for the Rams. She hit .221 and averaged 3.67 kills per set in three matches this weekend. Kandler was making her VCU debut after transferring from Daytona State College.
  • Freshman setter Tyler Sroufe dished out 26 assists and added three kills and three blocks for VCU.
  • Freshman CeCe Madison kicked in eight kills and eight digs, while junior libero Rebekah Strange dug seven balls.
  • Melissa Deatsch powered the Golden Grizzlies with 11 kills in 20 attempts.

THE DIFFERENCE

  • Oakland hit an efficient .417 in the match and committed just nine errors.
  • The Golden Grizzlies also limited extended VCU runs by cashing in on 75 percent of their side out opportunities.

The Rams will head to Fort Myers, Florida and the campus of Florida Gulf Coast for the FGCU Hilton Garden Inn Invitational Sept. 2-3. In addition to the host Eagles, VCU will battle New Orleans and former CAA rival Delaware.
