THE BASICS
  • Junior Kalah Jones led VCU with 13 kills and hit .250 in a sweep of second-place George Washington Sunday at the Siegel Center.
  • The Colonials entered the match winners of five of their last six, half a game behind first-place Dayton, but VCU limited GW to a .054 hitting percentage on the way to victory.
  • With the win, the Rams move into the middle of a hotly contested Atlantic 10 Conference race behind current leader Dayton (19-5, 7-1).
  • The Rams finished the week 3-0 after earlier wins at Hampton and over George Mason.

  • Three players registered double-digit digs for VCU, including freshman libero Rebekah Strage, who collected 16. The Rams' back line held firm against George Washington, which entered the match ranked second in the A-10 in hitting percentage and first in kills per set. VCU outdug the Colonials 51-37.
HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Jones spiked five of her kills in the first set as the Rams hit .258 on the way to a 25-20 win. George Washington battled VCU closely for the majority of the set, but the Rams, aided by a Sykes kill and block, scored the final four points of the set to earn the win.
  • The Colonials ran to a 17-15 lead in the second, but the Rams responded to a timeout by VCU Coach Jody Rogers with a 9-3 burst that put the Black and Gold in front 24-20.
  • Any possible George Washington comeback attempt in the third was put to rest by VCU's stout defense. For the second time in the match, the Rams held the Colonials to a .000 hitting percentage in a set and took the lead for good at 11-10.

  • VCU is now 6-1 at home this season.
