THE BASICS
  • Freshman Jessica Young enjoyed the best performance of her young career, blasting 19 kills while hitting .412, as VCU toppled streaking Saint Louis at Chaifetz Pavilion.
  • Saint Louis had won 11 of its last 12 matches, the only loss to Notre Dame. The hot streak included a 3-2 victory over defending Atlantic 10 Champion Duquesne on Sept 28.
  • The Rams have won six in a row and are now one of just three teams, joining Dayton and George Washington, unbeaten in A-10 play. VCU meets Dayton Sunday.
  • Junior outside hitter Kalah Jones added 14 kills, 10 digs and hit .267 for VCU.
  • Setter Cecilia Aragao directed an attack that hit .264 with 38 assists. She also registered four blocks.
  • VCU's stout back row also turned in another fine performance. The Rams held a 48-34 edge in digs. Freshmen Mary Kilbane and Rebekah Strange booked 12 and 11 digs, respectively.
HOW IT HAPPENED
  • VCU stormed to a 2-0 lead in the match after hitting .375 and .346, respectively in the opening two sets. The Rams committed just seven hitting errors as they seemed poised to run away with the victory.
  • The Billikens proved resilient, however. Saint Louis jumped out to a 9-3 lead in the third set and held on for a 26-24 win.
  • After trailing 2-0, Saint Louis nearly forced a fifth-set tiebreaker. The Rams denied the Billikens set point three times before pushing ahead. It wasn't until a kill by Young, followed by an Aragao/Janelle Sykes double block that VCU was able to secure a 30-28 triumph and a 3-1 match victory.
QUOTABLE FROM COACH JODY ROGERS
  • "Jessica [Young] and Kalah [Jones] were terrific tonight on the pins, and Cecilia Aragao was great. The plays at the pins tonight were great Defensively, the girls were on point. Every time we had a problem, we found a way to fix it."
  • "That's why we play a tough non-conference schedule. I want to girls to be uncomfortable. It's how you get to know each other and how you grow. You're seeing that pay off in these matches."
WHAT'S NEXT
VCU will cap its two-match road swing at Dayton on Sunday, Oct. 5 at 1 p.m.
