THE BASICS

  • Junior outside hitter Kalah Jones provided 10 kills and nine digs to lead VCU in a 3-0 loss to Kentucky, the nation's 16th-ranked team.
  • Freshman outside hitter Jessica Young continued her strong offensive play of late, adding nine kills to the VCU attack while hitting .217.
  • Senior setter Cecilia Aragao, meanwhile, was credited with 24 assists, nine digs and three blocks for the Rams.
  • Offensively, the Wildcats were as good as advertised and hit .359 for the match, including .484 in the opening set as Kentucky grabbed a 25-19 win for a 1-0 match lead.
  • VCU hit .222 and .225, respectively, in the opening two frames, but wasn't able to slow Kentucky's prolific offense.
HOW IT HAPPENED
  • VCU hung with Kentucky early. The Rams knotted the first set at 12-12 on a Sykes kill from Aragao, but the Wildcats responded with a 4-0 burst for a 16-12 cushion. The Rams battled, but could draw no closer than two points the rest of the way.
  • The second set followed a similar pattern, with VCU and Kentucky splitting the first 14 points of the match down the middle. But kills by three different Wildcats sparked a 4-0 run for Kentucky. An Aragao kill pushed the Rams within 16-15 later in the set, but the Wildcats held firm.
QUOTABLE FROM COACH JODY ROGERS
"Our ball control wasn't where it needed to be today on that first ball and it kept us from running our fast offense. We weren't able to get then out of system, and they're just too good and too big for that. I though Kalah Jones and Jessica Young played well on the pins today. They did a nice job of playing out of system, and that's going to help us down the road."

BEYOND THE BOX SCORE
  • Kentucky is VCU's second ranked opponent of the season and the seventh in eight matches that reached the NCAA Tournament in 2013.
WHAT'S NEXT
VCU will face 17th-ranked and host North Carolina Saturday at 7 p.m. at Carmichael Arena.
