TALKING POINTS
  • Sophomores Romana Kriskova and Kalah Jones combined to produce 23 kills and VCU outblocked Rhode Island 10.5 to 2 Sunday on the way to its seventh straight win.
  • VCU has won 14 of 15 matches and improved to 9-0 at home this season with the victory. The Black and Gold has won its last four matches via the sweep.
  • Jones hit .320 and smashed 11 kills, while Kriskova was good for 12 of her own, as well as three aces and three blocks.
  • Junior Amanda Love supplied 16 of VCU's 39 digs on the afternoon. She averaged 6.0 digs per set in two matches over the weekend.
  • VCU outhit Rhody .310-.090. In the third set, that margin was even more pronounced, as VCU hit .529 with just one attacking error, while Rhode Island hit -.069.
  • Sophomore Uzoamaka Ibeh and junior Janelle Sykes led VCU up front, combining for 12 total blocks. Ibeh also provided six kills on nine swings.
  • Freshman setter Kaitlyn LaMantia directed the VCU offense with 35 assists.

TURNING POINT

  • Rhode Island rallied from a 14-7 deficit to tie the first set at 14-all. The teams battled back-and-forth down the stretch, and Rhode Island eventually took a 24-23 lead. But VCU staved off set point twice, first with a Kriskova kill and then with a double block by Ibeh and Sykes. Jones then closed out a 27-25 VCU win with back-to-back kills.
BEYOND THE BOX SCORE
  • Kriskova moved within 10 kills of breaking VCU's single-season record for kills (549). The sophomore from Slovakia is averaging 4.86 kills per set this season.
  • With five blocks, Sykes moved into a tie with Courtney Hott for fourth in school single-season history with 150.
