RICHMOND, Va. – As the blocks pile up for VCU junior Janelle Sykes, so too do the awards. Sykes picked up her second Atlantic 10 Conference Defensive Player of the Week citation Monday, an honor she'll share with Duquesne's Taylor Lockett.

Sykes, a 6-foot-3 middle blocker, averaged 1.77 blocks per set for the Rams during a 2-1 week that included a critical league win at George Mason on Friday, Oct. 11. Sykes provided eight blocks and nine kills in that win, which moved the Rams to 5-0 in conference play at the time.
In addition to her defensive prowess, Sykes averaged 1.46 kills and 2.42 points per set last week for VCU.
The Clifton, Va. native spent two seasons as a role player for the Rams before this year's breakout effort. In 22 matches this season, Sykes is averaging 1.35 blocks per set, which ranks 25th nationally and is second in the A-10. She is also averaging 1.25 kills per set.
Sykes and the Rams (17-5, 5-1 A-10) will host a rematch with George Mason on Friday, Oct. 18 at 7 p.m. at the Verizon Wireless Arena at the Stuart C. Siegel Center.
