RICHMOND, Va. – Virginia Commonwealth University freshman setter Cecilia Aragao (Recife, Brazil) has been one of the better kept secrets in the Colonial Athletic Association this season, until now. Aragao was named CAA Rookie of the Week Monday.
Aragao directed a VCU attack that hit .293 in a 3-0 win over William & Mary on Nov. 10. She handed out 37 assists in three sets, an average of 12.67 per set, and collected seven digs, two kills and two blocks. It's the first All-CAA honor for Aragao, who leads the Rams and ranks fourth in the CAA in assists per set (9.46).
With Aragao running the offense, VCU has hit a league-best .236 this season, the Rams' highest mark in more than a decade.
However, Aragao has been more than a facilitator this season. The 5-foot-11 setter ranks third on the team with 97 blocks. She has also contributed 94 kills and a team-best 23 services aces. Her .301 hitting percentage leads the Rams.
Sixth-seeded VCU and Aragao return to the court on Friday, Nov. 18 when they meet third-seeded Towson in the CAA Championship Quarterfinals at 4 p.m. in Newark, Del.
