GETTING TO KNOW: SAMANTHA SALVI
With the second semester well underway, the VCU volleyball team is set to embark on its spring schedule. The Rams will look to build upon a young roster, that was able to finish fourth in the CAA regular season in 2010.
Sam Salvi, who was a freshman on the Rams' 2010 roster, will be a key returner for the Black and Gold in 2011. The Chicago, Ill. native recently sat down with Athletic Communication Student Assistant Andrew Phillips to see what keeps her busy off of the court.
AP: Why did you decide to come to VCU?
SS: I came to VCU because I wanted to go to school in warmer weather, and I felt the coaches were very trustworthy and cared about their athletes, which is really important to me. Also I liked how VCU was in the middle of the city, I think VCU has a lot of unique qualities that separate it from other schools.
AP: What is the best part about being on the VCU volleyball team?
SS: I would have to say all the unique and inspiring athletes I've met. I think all the student-athletes really support each other here. Also having the chance to travel across the US with my team is an awesome experience.
AP: Do you have any hidden talents, if so what?
SS: I can do the splits, and I'm abnormally double jointed...if that's even a talent
AP: If you could play on any other VCU Athletic team which one would you play on?
SS: Field Hockey. I think I would fit in with them just because they are short too, and I love the girls!
AP: Who has been the most influential person in your life?
SS: My dad. He is a very strong person, and has been my rock through everything since I've been here. He has done so much for me I'm not sure what I'd do without him, he's my best friend.
AP: If you could travel to any place in the world where would you go?
SS: I would go back to Italy!
AP: What actress would play you in a movie?
SS: Carmen Cortez from Spy Kids.
AP: If you could have dinner with any three people who would they be and why?
SS: Misty May because she is really the only woman who plays pro volleyball that I know of. Lance Armstrong, because he is a legendary hero, and Rex Grossman because I would love to listen to his stories about his struggles being the Bears quarterback.
