MECHANICSVILLE, Va. – Fourteen kills from sophomore Kristin Boyd (Wilmington, N.C.) weren't enough to prevent Virginia Commonwealth University from dropping a 3-0 decision to Northeastern Friday night at Hanover High School.
The Rams (2-14, 0-1 CAA), playing in their Colonial Athletic Association opener, struggled to get on track most of the evening, and failed to hit better than .200 in any of the three sets. VCU finished with an .078 hitting percentage, while the Huskies (10-5, 1-0 CAA) hit .188 for the match.
Senior Kelsie Clegg (Boise, Idaho) provided a fine defensive effort with 10 total blocks, including two solos, for the Rams. Senior Mariel Frey (Lititz, Pa.) added six kills and sophomore Marisa Low (Carlsbad, Calif.) registered 10 digs.
Two-time All-CAA selection Britney Brown led Northeastern with 14 kills, 15 assists and three blocks, while libero Jessica LaScola frustrated VCU with 19 digs for the Huskies.
VCU outblocked Northeastern, 12-9, but couldn't overcome 24 hitting errors.
The Rams return to the court on Saturday, Sept. 25, when they host CAA-rival Hofstra at Cosby High School in Midlothian, Va. at 7 p.m.
