SACRAMENTO, Calif. – Anytime you line up on the same track as the American record holder and reigning Gold Medalist in your event, something special is happening.
That's exactly what junior Kiara Porter of the VCU Track & Field will do on Thursday evening in Sacramento at the USA Outdoor Track & Field Championships. Porter will run in the third heat, along side Olympian and American record holder Sanya Richards-Ross.
Porter will be taking part in her second straight championships, the first time ever that a VCU track student-athlete has participated in the event on multiple occasions. She will be one of just 18 athletes in the country to run in the 400m.
The Yorktown, Va. native is coming off a first-team All-American season in which she posted a school record of 51.72 in the 400m at the NCAA East Preliminary Round. That time qualified her for this weekend in Sacramento.
Porter will take to the track at 8:40 p.m. EST for the first round of the 400m. The top 12 times advance to Friday's semifinals, which is set for 10:35 p.m. EST.
