ALBUQUERQUE, New Mexico – Only halfway through her junior season, it is clear that Kiara Porter is setting a new standard and raising the bar for VCU track & field.
For the second straight season, Porter earned All-American status at the 2014 NCAA Indoor Championships. In the process, she became the first Ram since Maria Elena Calle in 1999.
"What an amazing indoor season for Kiara. Won every 400m race this year without being challenged until last night. She gave it her all by putting everything on the line. Outcome wasn't what we wanted but came live with the results. I'm so proud of her efforts," Head Coach Jon Riley said. "Congrats to all the athletes that made it to this championships meet. We wish them well. Now, we will immediately turn our attention to the outdoor season and look forward to accomplishing our outdoor goals."
Porter lined up in the 400-meter semifinals and crossed the line in 53.13, good for 13th.
Porter and her teammates kick off the outdoor season next weekend, Saturday, March 22, when they host the VCU Ram Invite at Sports Backers Stadium.
