RICHMOND, Va. – After having two All-Americans in 2012-13, the VCU women's track & field squad is hard at working trying to accomplish even more in 2013-14.
The Rams are already hard at work aiming for those goals and fourteen new faces have joined them in their efforts.
Head Coach Jon Riley and his staff welcome four sprinters, four distance runners, four jumpers, one thrower and one hurdler.
Let's meet the new faces on the VCU women's track & field squad:
Imoni Anderson, Sprints (Glen Allen High School – Glen Allen, Va.)
Anderson is a quality sprinter with a personal best of 56.64 in the 400m. She will add depth to a strong group of 400m runners.
Ariel Briales, Distance (Princess Anne High School – Virginia Beach, Va.)
Ariel was all-district, all-region, and all state in the 1000, 1600, and 3200. This past year in indoors Ariel was third in the District Championships and fourth in the Regional Championships. Ariel also competed in the steeplechase an event that she only ran once, in 2012 she was ranked second in the state of Virginia with her sole performance in the event turning a personal best time of 7:42.38.
Brown ran the 400-meter leg of the distance medley relay at the BIG EAST Championships and helped Villanova to a runner-up finish. She has a career-best time of 54.89 in the 400 meters, set in the district championships meet. She also holds every school record from the 55-meter dash through the 800 meters, as well as in the long jump.
Jazmen Townsend, Jumps (University of Tennessee – Chesapeake, Va.)
Comes to VCU with a lot of experience on the collegiate level. Townsend will add depth to the jumps squad. She competed at UT the past 3 years and the highlight of her collegiate best jump of 18-2.25 at SEC Outdoor Championships during her sophomore year.
