NEWPORT NEWS, Va. – VCU Track and Field sophomore Kiara Porter is known for her speed on the track, but on Tuesday she was honored for her success in the classroom. Porter was named to the Atlantic 10's All-Academic Team for her performance on the track and in the classroom during the 2013 indoor season.
Porter won the 400-meter race with a time of 54.98 seconds at the Atlantic 10 Championships. The next closest finisher was two seconds behind Porter's pace. She also placed second in the 200-meter dash with a time of 24.41 seconds and was just tenths of a second behind the champion.
The Yorktown, Va. native joined Mara Olson of Butler, Duquesne's Shannon Abraham and Sherie Kay, Meghan McGlinchey and Wendy Hutchinson of La Salle, Kalyn Sheehan of Rhode Island, Jillian Prentice of Richmond, Jessica Hoefert and Allison Walter of Saint Louis on the all-academic squad.
VCU is currently preparing for the outdoor season, which starts on March 16 with the Ram Invite. It is the only home meet of the season and takes place at Sports Backers Stadium.
