FORTUNE’S BIG WEEKEND HIGHLIGHTS RAMS STAY AT ECAC/IC4A CHAMPIONSHIPS
BOSTON, Mass. – Maybe it was her way of having a pre-Mardi Gras party.
That's one way of explaining the weekend that senior Quina Fortune, a New Orleans, La. Native, put together to lead the Virginia Commonwealth University track teams to an outstanding showing at the ECAC/IC4A Championships.
"I was happy with our performance this weekend among some of the best that the East Region has to offer," Head Coach Jon Riley said. "This was yet another step towards progressing each week leading up to the conference championships later in the spring."
Fortune's weekend started with a school-record breaking performance in the 200-meter dash. She scorched the track to the tune of 23.87, which broke her own school record of 23.88 set last year.
The senior added another second-place showing in the 60-meter dash with a time of 7.53, finishing only behind her teammate Dionna Hayes, who became VCU's first-ever ECAC Champion with a time of 7.49 in the event. The time was just .01 seconds off the school record she set two weeks ago.
Hayes had a strong effort in the 200-meter with a time of 24.73, good for a top-seven finish in the event.
Finney rounded out the women's side of things with a fifth-place showing in the long jump with a leap of 18' 10 ½".
On the men's side, senior Axel Mostrag highlighted things with a personal best in the 800-meter run and was part of a school-record breaking performance in the 4x400 meter relay. In the 800, he clocked in at 1:50.21 in the prelims to set a personal best and eventually finished eighth in the finals of the event.
In the 4x400, he joined Donnie Seward, Jeff Hernandez and Dominic Costanzo to break the tape in 3:13.32 and break a 10-year old school record set in 2001 by the quartet of Grossenbacher, Hunter, Polk, Reid.
Rounding out the men's action was senior Antonio Norvell, who finished ninth in the 200-meter dash, clocking in at 21.77.
The Rams now have two weeks off until their first outdoor meet of the season at the William & Mary Invitational on March 19th.
