GETTING TO KNOW: JUNIOR STEPHANIE NEWING

One of the most underrated stories surrounding VCU Athletics over the past couple years has been the VCU Women's Track & Field program and the emergence the Rams have made in the CAA. The Black & Gold have broken countless records under Head Coach Jon Riley and his outstanding staff.

Part of that staff is Assistant Coach Allyson Thomas and her pole vaulting protege Stephanie Newing is one of main Rams to etch her name in the school record books last year. Prior to heading into exam week, Newing sat down with VCU Athletic Communications Student Assistant Nan Turner to talk about life outside pole vaulting.

NT: What's your favorite thing about VCU?
SN:
I love that VCU is so different, everyday I'm on campus I see something new.

NT: When you're not on the track, what do you like to do in your free time
SN:
In the summer I'd definitely be out on the water wakeboarding or windsurfing, but now I spend my free time just hanging out with friends and relaxing.

NT: If you could play on any other VCU sports team, which one would you choose? Why
SN:
I know it's a men's sport, but the only other sport I have experience with is golf. I love going to the driving range but the last time I played on a course I accidentally hit a house.

NT: Who has been the most influential person in your life? Why
SN:
My mom, she has gone through a lot in the last few years and her strength has been an inspiration to me.

NT: What are you most looking forward to this season
SN:
Breaking the indoor pole-vault record!

NT: What's your favorite and least favorite part of a meet day?
SN:
My favorite part is definitely competing, and my least favorite part is when I'm done with my event, even though I love cheering on my teammates!

NT: What's something people would be surprised to know about you?
SN:
One of my front teeth is half fake. Fun story involving me tripping over a trashcan and falling face first into a metal chair.

NT: If you had to describe yourself in one word what would it be and why?
SN:
Probably perseverance, when I want to accomplish something I'll keep trying until I succeed.
