RICHMOND, Va. -The VCU women's track & field program has seen a big change in culture and it's resulted in a huge jump in results.
Junior Jazlynn Finney has been a huge part of that successful turnaround with an outstanding sophomore year both on the track and in the jump pit. VCU Athletics' student assistant Nan Turner recently caught up with Finney to give fans a little more information on the Leesburg, Va. native.
NT: What's your favorite thing about VCU?
JF: My favorite thing about VCU is the fact that it is an urban campus. There is always something going on, and always something to do. I also like how diverse it is because it's nice to see a mix of people and cultures here.
NT: When you're not on the track, what do you like to do in your free time?
JF: My free time is very limited, so when I do get it, I like to just relax, maybe watch a couple movies, and chill with my friends.
NT: If you could play on any other VCU sports team, which one would you choose? Why?
JF: I'd probably choose the volleyball team because they bring in a lot of fans, and they have a lot of team spirit. I like that about them.
NT: Who has been the most influential person in your life? Why?
JF: The most influential person in my life is my mom. She and I are very close and she inspires me in a lot of ways. My mom is pretty much a Wonder Woman to me.
NT: What are you most looking forward to this season?
JF: Winning Conference! It's gonna happen.
NT: What's your favorite and least favorite part of a meet day?
JF: My favorite part of a meet day is coming back with the team, and acknowledging everybody's accomplishments and personal records broken that day. My least favorite part is waking up at the crack of dawn to leave!
NT: What's something people would be surprised to know about you?
JF: People would probably be surprised to know that before track life, I was a dancer and gymnast. I gave up all the artsy stuff to be a runner.
NT: If you had to describe yourself in one word what would it be and why?
JF: Determined, I have a lot of goals and aspirations both as a student and an athlete. I work very hard for the things I achieve, and I take everything one day at a time.
