RAMS DROP 4-3 DECISION TO WAKE FOREST

The Basics

  • Location: Thalhimer Tennis Center inside the HDL, Inc. Athletic Village – Richmond, Va.
  • The Short Story: Senior Cindy Chala and sophomores Yukako Noi and Olga Barscheuskaya earned straight set singles victories, but it wasn't enough as the VCU women's tennis team dropped a tough 4-3 decision to a red-hot Wake Forest squad. The Demon Deacons haven't lost a match all season and needed to win a tiebreaker at the #5 singles spot to earn the win over the Rams.
How It Happened
  • Wake Forest grabbed the early 1-0 lead with wins at the top two doubles spots.
  • VCU responded as Chala made quick work of Wake's Andrea Retolaza, 6-1, 6-1 at the top singles position.
  • Noi followed with a 6-2, 6-4 win at #2 singles to give the Rams a 2-1 lead.
  • Wake responded with two singles win to make it 3-2 in favor of the Demon Deacons.
  • Barscheuskaya evened the match at 3-3 with a 6-4, 6-3 over Xue Zhang at the #6 singles spot.
  • The match would come down to #5 singles, where Salome Kvitashvili won the first set 7-5, but dropped the next two, 7-5, 6-4 as the Demon Deacons came away with the win.
