RICHMOND, Va. – Cindy Chala has been on campus at VCU for less than a year, but her impact on the VCU women's tennis program has been immediate.
After posting a 15-5 record last spring and earning a spot at the NCAA Singles Championship, Chala earned preseason praise this week as the Versailles, France native was ranked in the top-50 in the ITA Preseason rankings.
Last year, Chala was the driving force behind VCU's run to the Atlantic 10 Championship, playing at the top spot in VCU's lineup all spring long. Her outstanding efforts earned her the Atlantic 10 Outstanding Player award.
With that honor, she earned an automatic berth into the NCAA Singles Championship, the first such berth for a VCU female since Tatsiana Uvarova in 2006. She nearly earned All-American honors, but dropped a three-set heartbreaker to Stanford's Krista Hardebeck in the Round of 32.
