CHALA NAMED PLAYER OF THE YEAR, FIVE RAMS EARN SPOT ON ALL-CONFERENCE SQUADS

NEWPORT NEWS, Va. - Thirteen straight wins, a top-40 ranking and a conference championship don't happen by accident. That's what happens with a roster full of talented student-athletes and that's exactly what the VCU women's tennis team this spring.

Those talented student-athletes were recognized for their hard work and outstanding accomplishments as five different Rams earned a spot on the Atlantic 10 All-Conference squads, highlighted by sophomore Cindy Chala, who was named the A-10's Most Outstanding Player for 2013.

Chala was joined by freshman Yukako Noi on the Atlantic 10 First Team, while junior Olga Terteac, sophomore Salome Kvitashvili and freshman Olga Barscheuskaya all earned spots on the Atlantic 10 Second Team.

A native of St. Cloud, France, Chala anchored down the top spot in VCU's singles lineup all spring, posting a 14-4 ledger with all four of those losses coming to top-30 players in the country. On the doubles court, she teamed with senior Josefin Hjertquist to win 10 of their final 11 doubles matches.

Noi battled injuries early on this spring, but came up big down the stretch winning eight of her final nine matches, including a 2-0 mark during the Atlantic 10 Tournament. She sealed VCU's conference championship when she finished off Xavier's Alex Brinker. Overall, Noi went 13-7, including a 7-3 mark at #2 singles.

Terteac was the only player at the Atlantic 10 Tournament to go 4-0 and finished the spring with a 14-6 mark, including 11-2 at the #4 and #5 singles spots. Kvitashvili led the Rams in overall wins this year with 25, including a 14-4 ledger this spring. She's a perfect 12-0 at the #3, #4 and #5 singles spots. Barscheuskaya put together a stellar debut season with the Black & Gold with a 20-6 overall mark, 13 of those wins came this spring.

VCU will learn its NCAA Tournament destination later today. Live video of the selection show can be found on NCAA.com and will start around 5:30 p.m.
