NEWPORT NEWS, Va. - Just over a month into her debut season at VCU, Cindy Chala is leaving quite an impression.
Not only is she playing at the top of the Rams' lineup, but she's having success doing so with a 6-3 mark and was slotted as the 89th-best singles player in the country in the latest ITA rankings. Her play this past week not only helped the Black & Gold move to 9-4 on the year, but also earned her Atlantic 10 Rookie of the Week accolades.
Chala went 3-1 overall last week, picking up two doubles victories with partner Josefin Hjertquist against Virginia Tech (8-2) and Penn State (8-1), both from the number two spot.
In singles play, the rookie defeated Virginia Tech's Isel Martinez-Marcos in straight sets (6-2, 6-1) before dropping a match in three sets to 36th ranked Petra Januskova of Penn State (6-2, 3-6, 6-3).
The St. Cloud, France native improved to 6-3 in singles action this spring from the top spot for VCU, with all three losses coming to players ranked nationally in the top 36.
VCU returns home this weekend to host Maryland and South Florida at the Thalhimer Tennis Center. First up is Maryland on Friday afternoon. First serve is set for 3 p.m.
