PALO ALTO, Calif. – For most students at VCU, a trip to California would include bathing suits, sunglasses and credit cards. Not for senior Kateryna Yergina and junior Alex Bara on the VCU women's tennis team, who head to the West Coast on a business trip.
This business trip will be for the NCAA Doubles Championships on the campus of Stanford University, which begins on Thursday morning.
On Tuesday, Yergina and Bara found out who their opposition will be, drawing the fifth-ranked duo out of the University of Miami, Bianca Eichkorn and Anna Bartenstein.
VCU's duo earned an automatic berth as the Colonial Athletic Association's top doubles combination after posting a 16-8 regular season at the top doubles spot for the Black & Gold. Along the way, Yergina and Bara defeated two ranked opponents, including 11th-ranked Sandhya Nagaraj and Sanaa Bhambri on March 12th.
Entering this weekend, Miami's duo is ranked fifth in the latest ITA poll and hold a 31-4 ledger this year. The pair is 24-2 this spring, 14-3 against national ranked opponents and are unbeaten in their last 10 matches.
"There's a reason that only 32 doubles teams make this tournament. Every pair is going to be among the best in the country and we knew that coming out here," Associate Head Coach Yana Carollo said. "All we have to do is stay focused on playing our best tennis and we'll have a chance."
An exact time for the first round match has not been set.
