FOUR RAMS EARN ALL-CAA ACCOLADES
RICHMOND, Va. – Several years ago, a movie was made about the long-standing comic book, "The Fantastic Four." Now it seems as if the movie and book have come to real life in the form of the Virginia Commonwealth University women's tennis program.
While that's a slight fabrication of the truth, that's one way to sum up the annual Colonial Athletic Association banquet for the Black & Gold as four different Rams took home All-CAA accolades.
"It was a good night for our girls, it's nice to see them get some recognition," Associate Head Coach Yana Carollo said. "Now, we're just looking forward to getting to business tomorrow and trying to defend our title."
On the singles side, breakout star junior Alex Bara and senior Kateryna Yergina earned All-CAA First Team honors, while both Ana Bara and Josefin Hjertquist were recognized on the All-CAA Second Team.
Alex Bara narrowly missed being named CAA Player of the Year after posting a 17-1 mark this spring, with her only loss coming in a three-set heartbreaker. She's worked her way all the way up the Black & Gold lineup, where she started the spring at the fourth spot and ended at the top. Yergina played at the top of VCU's lineup all spring with 11 of her 14 wins this spring coming in one of the first two spots in the rotation.
Ana Bara has compiled a 17-13 singles mark this year and enters this weekend having won three of her last four matches. Hjertquist played in one of the top two spots in the Rams' rotation all spring and has racked up an 18-16 ledger in singles play this year.
Those same four Rams weren't done as they were also honored on the doubles side. Earning a spot on the All-CAA First Team doubles, Alex Bara and Yergina played at the top doubles position most of the spring, en route to a 13-3 mark and a #31 ranking in the latest ITA doubles poll.
Hjertquist and Ana Bara posted a 10-8 mark in doubles play this spring and earned All-CAA Second Team accolades on the doubles side for the second straight season.
