RAMS DROP #35 DEPAUL TO EARN SPLIT AT ITA KICKOFF WEEKEND

CHAPEL HILL, N.C. – Last spring, junior Alex Bara ripped off 26 wins en route to a breakout year to help the Virginia Commonwealth University women's tennis team to a top-25 season and another CAA Championship.

Bara is out to prove that last year was no fluke, posting two victories at the ITA Kickoff Weekend in Chapel Hill, N.C. to help the Black & Gold to a split of their two matches, including a 5-2 win over 35th-ranked DePaul.

After suffering a tough 5-2 loss to 15th-ranked Georgia on Saturday afternoon, VCU bounced back to battle to a hard-fought win over the Blue Demons.

In the match against DePaul, junior Ana Bara and sophomore Josefin Hjertquist got things started with a 8-5 victory at the top doubles spot. Alex Bara and senior Kateryna Yergina secured the doubles point for the Rams with a 9-7 win over Katarina Milinkovic and Kelsey Lawson in the #2 doubles position.

Freshman Olga Terteac made it 2-0 in favor of VCU with an easy 6-2, 6-3 victory over Cali Gustafson at the sixth singles spot. After DePaul grabbed their first point at #1 singles, Yergina took a hard-fought 6-4, 1-6, 6-3 win over Gia McKnight at #3.

That's when Alex Bara stepped in and secured the win for the Black & Gold. After dropping the first set 1-6 to Lawson, Bara answered with back-to-back 6-4 set victories to give VCU its sixth win of the 2011 spring season.

VCU returns home to Thalhimer Tennis Center next Saturday when it hosts conference foe James Madison in a 2 p.m. match.
