YERGINA LEADS RAMS TO 6-1 WIN OVER BOSTON UNIVERSITY
RICHMOND, Va. – Junior Kateryna
Yergina (Kiev, Ukraine) is the reigning Colonial
Athletic Association Player of the Week in women's tennis.
Apparently, she wants to make this a routine as the third-year
standout picked up her 11th straight singles win and helped the
Virginia Commonwealth University women's tennis team ease past the
Terriers of Boston University, 6-1, at the Thalhimer Tennis
Center.
Yergina teamed with Laura Burns
(Hertford, England) to top Francine Whu and Monikia Mical
at #2 doubles, 8-1. The duo of Alex Bara
(Oradea, Romania) and Olena
Leonchuk (Kiev, Ukraine) secured the doubles point for
the Black & Gold with a 8-1 win at #3 doubles over Petra
Santini and Inayat Khosla.
The singles matches would start the same way with Yergina pounding
Whu, 6-1, 6-0 at #2 to put the Rams up 2-0, with Bara following
with a 6-1, 6-0 victory of her own at #5 singles.
BU would get a point at #1 singles, but no more as Burns locked
down VCU's 15th win of the year with a 6-0, 7-5 win over Vivien
Laszloffy at #3 singles.
Freshman Manuela
Pietzuch (Hechingen, Germany) and Leonchuk rounded out
the day with wins at #6 and #4, respectively.
The Black & Gold wrap up their busy stretch of three matches
in three days with a 12 p.m. showdown with conference rival
Delaware on Monday afternoon.
