CLEMSON, S.C. – The Virginia Commonwealth University women's tennis team suffered its first loss of the 2010 campaign on Sunday afternoon, dropping a 5-2 decision to 14th-ranked Clemson at the Clemson Indoor Tennis Center.

Senior Laura Burns (Hertford, England) was the standout for the Black & Gold, winning both her doubles and singles match to improve to 2-0 in both.

Burns and junior Kateryna Yergina teamed up to drop Nelly Ciolkowski and Laurianne Henry, 8-3, to get the Rams ahead in doubles, but the Tigers rallied for victories of 8-3 and 8-4 to take the doubles point.

Clemson swept the first four singles matches but not without a fight as Yergina gave ninth-ranked Josipa Bek trouble at #1, 6-0, 6-7 (6), 6-1. Burns and classmate Olena Leonchuk (Kiev, Ukraine) picked up wins at #5 and #6 to get the Black & Gold on the board.

Burns dropped Henry, 6-2, 6-3, while Leonchuk cruised to her third straight set victory of the season, 6-2, 6-1 over Estefania Balda.

The Rams will now head to ITA Indoor Nationals next weekend in Durham, N.C.
