RICHMOND, Va. – Redshirt sophomore midfielder Emma Kershner has been named as Atlantic 10 Conference Offensive Player of the Week. It is her first time winning the award this season. This weekend, Kershner recorded three goals and one assist in wins over Rhode Island and La Salle.
In the match against Rhode Island, Kershner scored her first collegiate goal in the 74th minute of action. The goal, which came on a shot from the corner of the box, extended VCU's lead to 4-0 late in the second half. A few minutes later, Kershner earned an assist after playing a ball to Susanna Friedrichs who scored a goal, giving the Rams a 5-0 lead.
Kershner followed that up by scoring two more goals in a 4-2 win over La Salle on Sunday. Her first goal of the day came after she intercepted a bad La Salle pass, and weaved through the defense before firing a shot from just outside the 18-yard box. The attempt found the back of the net, just sneaking into the bottom right corner. The second goal came on a diving header off of assists from Karen Lohrmann and Megan Enos in the 39th minute. Her score put VCU back on top 2-1 after a La Salle goal in the 35th minute.
The Rams concluded their season with a 14-3 record including a 9-1 record against A-10 opponents. VCU will host George Washington at 7 p.m. on Saturday, Oct. 27, for the opening round of the A-10 Tournament.
