RICHMOND, Va. – The VCU Women's Soccer program was picked to finish third in the Atlantic 10 Conference this fall, according to a vote of the league's 13 head coaches. Additionally, senior Courtney Conrad (pictured) and freshman Alexandra Wong were each named to preseason all-conference squads.
The Rams, who advanced to the A-10 Championship match in their first season in the league a year ago, welcome back three of their top five scorers from 2012. Conrad, a preseason all-conference selection, led VCU in goals (11), game-winning goals (five) and points (23) last year, while earning A-10 First Team honors and All-Tournament recognition.
Wong, meanwhile, was named to the A-10's preseason all-rookie squad. The Rockville, Md., native begins her collegiate career after four seasons at Richard Montgomery High School. She also captured an ECNL national championship with the McLean Power in 2011.
VCU is set to begin its first season under the direction of Lindsay Vanderspiegel, who joined the Rams in May after two seasons as the head coach at Georgia Southern, where she guided the Eagles to their first Southern Conference Tournament title and NCAA appearance last year.
VCU hosts James Madison in an exhibition match on Friday, Aug. 16 at 7 p.m. at Sports Backers Stadium. The Rams open the regular season at No. 8 Virginia on Aug. 23 before facing top-ranked North Carolina in Charlottesville, Va., on Aug. 25.
