RICHMOND, Va. —The National Soccer Coaches Association of America has named VCU defender Karol Sanchez to the 2011 Women's Division I All-Mid-Atlantic Region Third Team after a strong junior campaign.
The 2011 Colonial Athletic Association Defensive Player of the Year helped anchor a VCU backline that surrendered only 15 goals, while posting 10 shutouts last season. The Rams were particularly strong in conference play, recording a league-best 0.43 goals against average versus CAA foes.
VCU found its groove during the last month of the season, reeling off 10-straight games without a loss, including six victories in conference play. The Rams allowed just two goals during that stretch and held an opponent scoreless eight times.
Earlier in the season, Sanchez's defense went 532 minutes without surrendering a goal, which was the second-longest streak in school history. The VCU backline allowed one goal or less in 17 of its 21 games.
The Palmares, Costa Rica native also scored the game-winner in VCU's 2-0 victory over James Madison in the regular season finale, which secured the No. 2 seed in the CAA Tournament. The Rams went on to defeat Northeastern in the semifinals before falling to 20th-ranked William & Mary, 1-0, in overtime of the CAA title match.
