VIRGINIA LOTTERY STUDENT ATHLETE OF THE WEEK: MOLLY BARCIKOWSKI

RICHMOND, Va. - Lacrosse junior attacker Molly Barcikowski has been named the Virginia Lottery Student-Athlete of the Week after scoring seven goals and adding three assists in two games.

Barcikowski netted the game-winning goal for VCU in a thrilling 17-16 win over Massachusetts on April 22, a win that clinched the third year program's first berth in the Atlantic 10 Tournament, and snapped UMass' 61-game A-10 winning streak, an NCAA record. Barcikowski was also named the A-10 Player of the Week for her efforts.

The Rams jumped out to an early 3-0 lead before UMass was able to battle back. VCU closed the game on a 7-1 scoring run to take a 16-15 lead with 21 seconds but a late goal from the Minutewomen forced overtime before Barcikowski scored the game-winner.

"It was definitely a different feeling going into the game Sunday. On the field, all 37 of us in our heads thought that we were going to win this game and the thought of losing never really crossed our minds. When we went up in the first five minutes, I really think that's what helped win us the game. Going up early I think put them off and helped start our momentum," said Barcikowski.

Against UMass, Barcikowski scored five goals and added two assists. Her game-winning goal came on a free position attempt with 1:43 remaining in the sudden-death overtime period. Barcikowski also scored two goals and added an assist in the Rams' close 13-12 loss to La Salle on April 20.

"It was good vibes all around before the game. I know all of our seniors wanted to play their hearts out and get a win against a [UMass] team that has accomplished a lot. I think now that we've won, when teams look at the standings now, the ones who put us aside before now know VCU is here to play. With the strides we've made in conference play, why not VCU now to compete for a title? Why can't it be us to win the conference tournament? I think that's what we're feeling now," said Barcikowski.

She moved her total points total to 54 on the season which is tied for first on the team and ranks in the top 10 in the Atlantic 10. She is also eighth in the A-10 in assists on the season with 23.
