Join the Rams on Sunday, Feb. 13 as Virginia Commonwealth University celebrates National Girls and Women in Sports Day. It's a great opportunity for girls (ages 8-12) to learn more about sports and nutrition. All seven women's sports at VCU are joining forces to promote and educate girls about participating in athletics while following a healthy lifestyle. Finish the day by cheering on the VCU women's basketball team as the Rams face Hofstra at 2 p.m.
This year, the theme of the Day is "Play, Believe, Achieve." For 25 years, National Girls and Women in Sports Day has motivated girls and women to get active and stay active. Being involved in sports and staying physically active equips girls and women with self-confidence and strength to flourish in all areas of their life.
NGWSD began in 1987 as a single event in Washington, D.C. to honor Olympic volleyball star Flo Hyman. Since then the day has grown into a nationwide celebration across all 50 states. The day can always be attributed back to the work Hyman did as an athlete and for her work to assure equality for women's sports. Hyman died of Marfan's Syndrome in 1986 while competing in a volleyball tournament in Japan. Since then, NGWSD has become a day to acknowledge the past accomplishments of female athletes and recognize current achievements of women in sports.
