PAYNE AND FINNIE DOMINATE SPRINTS AT DARIUS DIXON INVITE

The Short Story: Seniors Kareem Payne and Marcus Finnie dominated their sprinting events as the Rams stretch their legs in preparation for the Atlantic 10 Championships later this month. Payne's 

HOW IT HAPPENED

  • Senior Kareem Payne was the top finisher among attached runners in the 60-meter dash. Payne sprinted to a school record 6.76 seconds, a record previously set by Manuel Rynart in 2008. Fellow senior Marcus Finnie also advance to the finals and covered the 60 meters in 6.98. The pair also claimed third and fourth in the 200-meter with Finnie running a 21.91, and Payne a 22.05.
  • In the 1,000-meter junior Austin Conway placed third with a personal best 2:31.11. Right behind Conway was freshman Jordan Fountain coming in at 2:31.54 at fifth place.
  • Ian Davis placed fourth in the 60-meter hurdle finals with a personal best 8.20. Davis' previous best of 8.22 got him second place at last year's Atlantic 10 Indoor Championships.
  • Freshman Ebenezer Belayneh recorded a new personal best in shot put with a mark of 14.99, good enough for sixth place.

VCU will compete in the the Atlantic 10 Track & Field Indoor Championships taking place on Feb. 17 and 18. The Championships are taking place in Kingston, R.I. VCU's women's team won the meet last year, taking home their second conference championship in two years.
