With a portion of the season under their belt, VCU Track & Field athletes have positioned themselves within the top five of the conference in eleven events. Jazlynn Finney (5.78 meters, long jump) has been the top long jump contestant in the conference since January 14.
Junior sprinter Dionna Hayes (Bowie, Md.) claimed the fastest time among CAA competitors in the 60 meters when she finished in 7.56 seconds at the New Balance Collegiate Invitational.
Redshirt-sophomore thrower Jaleesa Williams proved to be one of the top shot put contenders in the CAA by breaking her own school record of 14.57 meters. Her new school record toss at the New Balance Collegiate Invitational landed at 14.78 meters and puts her in first place in the CAA.
The Virginia Beach, Va. native also showed up big in the weight throw, launching the weight for a distance of 16.37 meters, which puts her in third place in the CAA.
Freshman thrower Brandon Ruffin (Chesapeake, Va.) showed to be one of the conference’s most promising throwers by setting a new personal record in the shot put at the New Balance Collegiate Inviational. His 15.81 meters toss ranks him second in the CAA.
Redshirt-sophomore Chaneka Perry continued her hot streak and placed second at the New Balance Collegiate Invitational, jumping 12.29 meters. This mark gives the Newport News, Va. native sole possession of the number three spot in the CAA.
The Rams will look to claim more top five spots in the conference when they return to action on Friday, February 17 when they travel to Blacksburg, Va. to participate in the Virginia Tech Challenge.
