RAMS BREAK TWO SCHOOL RECORDS ON DAY ONE OF VIRGINIA TECH CHALLENGE

BLACKSBURG, Va.  – There's a saying out there that says "records are made to be broken."

Well, that must have been exactly what the Virginia Commonwealth University track & field program was thinking on the first day of the Virginia Tech Indoor Challenge. The Rams broke two records and grabbed eight top-five finishes amongst elite level competition.

"We've been working hard with this particular meet on our mind," Head Coach Jon Riley said. "This is a great start to what we hope continues to be a good weekend for VCU Track."

Sophomore standout Dionna Hayes (pictured, right) highlighted the day with a blistering time of 7.48 in the 60-meter dash, which broke a seven-year old school record of Shaunette Davey (7.53) and earned her a victory in the event. The Bowie, Md. Native wasn't done as she also won the 200-meter dash with a time of 24.80, which marked a personal best.

Junior Rachel Montague was the other Ram to etch her name in the school-record book as she clocked a time of 8.85 in the preliminary round of the 60-meter hurdles. Her time broke a six-year old record of Pia Ruth, who clocked in at 8.88 in 2005. Montague went on to finish in the top-eight in the finals of the event.

The Rams took home two top-five finishes in the long jump on the women's side with junior Jazlynn Finney (19' 4 ¾")and freshman Niaimani Aduma (18' 9 ¾") both placing among ACC competition in the event. Finney also clocked a personal-best in the 200-meter with a time of 24.90

Freshman Justine Dutton rounded out the top-five finishers on the women's side as she cleared 10' 11 ¾" in the pole vault.

Senior Antonio Norvell starred on the men's side with a leap of 23' 3 ½" in the long jump, good for third-place and an ECAC-qualifying mark.

Freshman Eric Zwarycz (pictured, left) cleared 13' 7 ¼" in the pole vault to earn a top-five finish for the Black & Gold.

The Rams are back in action on Saturday as they wrap up a long weekend at the prestigious Virginia Tech Indoor Challenge.
