NEWPORT NEWS, Va. – While they are from opposite sides of France, senior Alexis Heugas (Jurancon, France) (pictured, top right) and freshman Jean Baptiste Mateo (Marseille, France) (pictured, bottom left) have both proven to be critical imports for the VCU men's tennis program.
This week, the French duo took home a pair of weekly Atlantic 10 accolades as Heugas was named A-10 Co-Performer of the Week and Mateo took home Rookie of the Week honors.
Heugas went 5-1 overall last week in the top singles and doubles position, including two wins against ranked opponents, helping the Rams pick up two team victories.
Against No. 11 Mississippi State, Heugas and partner Nick Jones defeated the 55th-ranked pair of Jordan Angus and Malte Stropp, 6-2 before taking a 6-5(3), 6-3 singles win over No. 52 Florian Lakat. Heugas also picked up doubles victories against Texas Tech and Boise State.
On the year, Heugas is 15-7 overall and 7-4 this spring. All his matches have come at the #1 spot in VCU's lineup. In his two-plus seasons with the Rams, Heugas is 67-27 in singles action.
Mateo was named Rookie Performer of the Week for the fourth time this spring after going 3-1 in singles and doubles action last week.
In VCU's win against No. 11 Mississippi State, the freshman went to match point with Rishab Argawal, picking up a 2-6, 6-4, 6-4 victory that would prove crucial in the 4-3 VCU upset. Mateo, partnered with Alejandro Argente, won their No. 3 doubles matches against Texas Tech and Boise State.
On the year, Mateo is 15-7 overall and 9-3 this spring.
