RAMS TAKE DOWN 35TH-RANKED N.C. STATE IN 4-3 THRILLER

  • The Short Story: Freshman Jean Baptiste Mateo won a decisive 7-1 tiebreaker at the fourth singles spot to clinch a thrilling 4-3 win for the VCU men's tennis team over 34th-ranked N.C. State. Mateo, Alexis Heugas and Alejandro Argente all took down ranked opponents in the win. 

How It Happened

  • N.C. State grabbed the early advantage with wins at the top two doubles spots, taking the doubles point and a 1-0 lead.
  • Heugas followed with a dominating 6-4, 6-3 win over 82nd- ranked Thomas Weigel at the top singles spot to even it up at 1-1.
  • Newcomer Vuc Velickovic gave VCU a 2-1 lead with a 6-5 (7-3), 6-4 win over Beck Bond at the sixth spot in the lineup.
  • After the Wolfpack evened it up with a win at the second singles position, Argente finished off 76th-ranked Robbie Mudge at #3 singles, 2-6, 6-3, 6-4 to make it 3-2 in favor of the Rams.
  • Once again, N.C. State responded to even it up, but Mateo came up big at #4 singles, taking down 83rd-ranked Nick Horton, 6-4, 2-6, 6-5 (7-1).
