URBANA, Ill. – Senior Max Wennakoski entered the NCAA Singles Tournament having already etched his name into the VCU men's tennis record books. The only thing that could cool him off was the rains of Illinois and 16th-ranked Ray Sarmiento of USC.
After several rain delays, Wennakoski couldn't get past Sarmiento, who moved onto the Round of 32 for the third straight season. The USC junior seemed to have an answer for everything as he took home the 6-4, 6-3 victory and ended Wennakoski's magical senior season.
The Helsinki, Finland native posted 32 wins on the year, good for fifth on VCU's single-season wins chart. He was named Atlantic 10 Most Outstanding Player and earned his fourth straight all-conference accolade.
He also finishes with 88 career singles victories, which ranks fifth all-time in Black & Gold history.
