RAMS RETURN TO WIN COLUMN WITH 5-2 DEFEAT OF ELON

RICHMOND, Va.  – Saturday afternoon provided not only great weather but a chance for the Virginia Commonwealth University men's tennis team to get back into the win column after dropping two tough road contest to ACC foes last week.

It wouldn't be easy however as a highly-talented Elon squad came to Richmond, just a couple weeks removed from toppling SEC power, South Carolina.

Led by the top portion of their lineup, VCU powered its way past the Phoenix to a 5-2 win and improved their overall mark to 8-3 on the year.

"I'm proud of the way our guys focused after a tough weekend last week," Head Coach Paul Kostin said. "We have to be able to bring that intensity every match and continue to improve as the season moves on."

After the Rams quickly grabbed the doubles point, freshman Antoine Baroz extended VCU's cushion with a straight set 6-0, 6-3 victory over Chase Helpingstine at the #4 singles spot.

Sophomore Max Wennakoski and senior Tim Johannsen followed with singles victories of their own to secure the match win for the Black & Gold.

Jaime Vazquez Catoira rounded things out for the Rams with a hard-fought 4-6, 7-6, 7-6 win at the #3 singles position.

The Rams return to the court on Sunday when they battle the Retrievers of UMBC in an 11 a.m. match at the Thalhimer Tennis Center.
