RICHMOND, Va. – The Virginia Commonwealth University men's tennis team knew that it had to bring it's "A-game" on Sunday afternoon when UMBC came to Thalhimer Tennis Center. It had been just over a week since the Retrievers traveled to Norfolk to topple CAA foe, Old Dominion.

Sophomore Max Wennakoski and his Black & Gold teammates made sure it wouldn't have the same fate with a 7-0 sweep of UMBC to improve to 9-3 and even more impressively, a perfect 7-0 in the Atlantic Region.

"With a young team, you never know how they will respond to some adversity," Head Coach Paul Kostin said. "Last weekend we played two teams that were just flat better than us, but it's never easy to bounce right back, but our guys did that this weekend."

The Rams swept through the doubles matches led by senior Tim Johannsen and freshman Antoine Baroz who compiled a 8-1 defeat of Cristian Hodel and Rasid Winklaar at the #2 doubles spot.

Wennakoski got things started on the singles circuit with an easy 6-2, 6-0 win over Joe Adewumi at the #2 singles position. He was followed by Johannsen, who took down Hodel at #1 singles, 7-5, 6-4.

Freshman Alejandro Argente and sophomore Jaime Vazquez Catoira kept the momentum with the Rams with hard-fought victories at the fifth and third singles spots, respectively.

Baroz and sophomore Camill Salomon wrapped things up with wins of their own to secure the sweep.

VCU returns to action next Saturday when ACC foe, North Carolina State, comes to Richmond for a 1 p.m. showdown at Thalhimer Tennis Center.
