BLACKSBURG, Va. – The Virginia Commonwealth University men's
tennis team got wins from its top two singles players, but it
wasn't enough as the 23rd-ranked Hokies of Virginia Tech got past
the Black & Gold, 5-2, on Wednesday afternoon.
Senior Thibaut Charron (Sens, France) teamed with
freshman Krisztian Krocsko (Budapest, Hungary) at
#1 doubles for the first time this season and picked up a victory
on a tiebreaker, 7-6 (6). Unfortunately, the Hokies were able to
pick up the other two doubles matches to grab a 1-0 lead.
Virginia Tech quickly secured the win posting three straight
singles wins before Charron and junior Tim Johannsen
(Hohenlockstedt, Germany) posted hard-fought wins over
ranked players.
Charron got past 38th-ranked Yoann Re, 6-2, 1-6, 6-3 at #1
singles, while Johannsen beat 61st-ranked Luka Somen, 4-6, 6-4, 1-0
(5) at #2 singles.
The Rams wrap up their regular season with a neutral site match
against South Alabama on Sunday afternoon in Norfolk. First serve
is set for 10 a.m.
