Rafael Andrade Santos was named the Virginia Lottery Student-Athlete of the Week after his performance in the Atlantic 10 quarterfinal match Sunday evening. Santos collected two of VCU's four goals in the win against seventh seeded St. Bonaventure.
It was Santos' second two-goal performance of the season, and his fifth time capturing the game-winner. The senior also added an assist.
Santos' first goal came on a free kick in the 66th minute, giving VCU a 2-1 lead. "It actually wasn't that difficult," Santos said.
"Their keeper actually helped me. He gave me a perfect angle to shoot on his side. It was pretty close, so I just had to hit it hard and on target."
His second was an insurance goal that moved the score to 4-1 with eight minutes to play. It was the third goal Santos had scored against St. Bonaventure in less than a week. He was the only Ram to find the net in a 2-1 loss to the Bonnies on Wednesday.
The midfielder from Rio de Janiero now has 27 points on the season, and sits tied for first in the Atlantic 10 in that department.
"I have a goal in mind that I want to reach. I don't think I had this mentality in past seasons. I feel that this year I'm way more committed to where I want to go. It's to get in the draft, and after that working to get a contract in the MLS," Santos said.
The Rams are set to take on Rhode Island in the conference semifinal match on Friday, Nov. 10 in Dayton, Ohio.
Favorite VCU soccer memory: One was two years ago when I scored what I would say is the best goal personally for me. It was against Fordham in the tournament semifinals, putting us in the final. Also the game against Maryland this year.
