RICHMOND – The VCU Men's Soccer team will extend their season, as the Rams were selected as the #16 overall seed in the 2017 NCAA College Cup, as announced by the NCAA on Monday afternoon. It will be the Rams first appearance in the tournament since 2013, and first time getting a first round bye since 2012.
VCU currently holds a 12-6 overall record, and will receive a first-round bye in the tournament. They will play host to the winner of the Butler/Lipscomb matchup on Sunday, November 19 at 5 p.m. at Sports Backers Stadium. With a win Sunday night, VCU would face a potential matchup with the number-one overall seed in the tournament, Wake Forest the following weekend.
"It's nice to be back in the tournament after being out the last three years," said Head Coach Dave Giffard. "We were a game away each of the last two years, and this year we were rewarded for our body of work and what we have done so far this season."
The Black and Gold dropped a hard-fought Atlantic 10 final game versus UMass on Sunday 3-1, clinching the Minutemen's place in the NCAA Tournament. They will square off against Colgate in a first round game Thursday night. Also making the tournament from the A-10 was Fordham, getting an at-large bid after earning the automatic bid in 2016. The Rams of Fordham will play St. Francis (Brooklyn) Thursday as well.
Other opponents that VCU faced this season that made the tournament were Coastal Carolina, Old Dominion, Maryland, and UNC Wilmington, going 4-2 overall against those teams including UMass and Fordham.
"This group of seniors deserves the chance to play this time of year and can't wait for their NCAA Tournament journey to get started on Sunday night," added Giffard.
