RICHMOND – VCU Men’s Soccer Players Rafael Andrade Santos and Mario Sequeira each took the Atlantic 10 by storm this past week, and they were recognized for it. The pair swept the A-10 weekly awards, as Santos earned Offensive Player of the Week and Sequeira earning both Defensive Player and Rookie of the Week as announced by the conference office Monday afternoon.
Santos, a senior midfielder from Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, had a hand in all the VCU Rams goals this week, scoring three and assisting two in a 2-0 week for the VCU Rams. He scored twice and added an assist in VCU’s 3-0 win at No. 9 Maryland. Santos started the comeback win for the Rams on Saturday by scoring a goal and assisting the game-winner from Francesco Amorosino within minutes of each other to down the Rhode Island Rams 2-1 at Sports Backers Stadium.
Sequeira did his part and more in the Rams 2-0 week, as he shutout No. 9 Maryland. The freshman goalkeeper from San Jose, Costa Rica, made three saves, all of which were big plays in the game to keep it scoreless. He also helped the Rams to a victory over Rhode Island on Saturday, earning the Rams their fourth straight win and ninth in their last 10 games. Sequiera sits atop the league in all goalkeeper categories.
