RICHMOND – The VCU Men's Soccer team and Head Coach Dave Giffard have announced the addition of one final piece to their 2017 recruiting class in the form of goalkeeper Mario Sequeira. Sequeira will join the Rams in just a few short weeks for the 2017 season.
Sequeira joins VCU from Costa Rica, where he was a member of Costa Rica's U20 national team. He started and played every minute of the CONCACAF qualifying tournament in San Jose where he helped Costa Rica punch their ticket to the U20 World Cup in South Korea last month. The Costa Rican's advanced from their group before felling in the round of 16 to eventual champion England by a score of 2-1.
"We are excited to add Mario to our team and our pool of goalkeepers for the upcoming season," said Head Coach Dave Giffard. "He is the epitome of a student athlete and what college soccer at the highest level is all about. He's a young man who competes at the highest level in his country with options to remain with one of the top team's in CONCACAF and sign his first professional contract, but also has a huge desire to continue his education off of it."
Sequeira spent the last nine years as a member of Deportivo Saprissa, captaining several of the age group teams including the reserves. This last year was the highlight of his time with the Central American giants as an injury to the reserve goalkeeper forced him into first team duty for a period of six months. As an amateur player, he served as the team number two in every league and CONCACAF Champions league match for the entirety of the fall season, making one appearance against Carmelita on July 24th in a 4-0 victory.
Sequeira joins a long list of VCU alumni who have joined VCU from Saprissa including Dennis Castillo, Juan Monge Solano, Gonzalo Segares and former goalkeeper and assistant coach Saul Monteiro.
