RICHMOND, Va. – The awards keep pouring in for the VCU Men's Soccer team after turning in one of its best seasons in school history. Rookies Dennis Castillo and Devon Fisher are the latest to receive recognition as the duo was named to TopDrawerSoccer.com's Top 100 Freshman rankings.
Castillo, selected as the 50th-best freshmen in the country in 2012, finished his first collegiate season with six goals for 12 points. The defender was a perfect 3-for-3 on penalty kicks, while helping lead the Rams to six shutouts. Castillo has also received a Freshman All-America citation from CollegeSoccerNews.com as well as being named to the NSCAA's All-Mid-Atlantic Region Second Team. At the conclusion of the regular season, the San Jose, Costa Rica native garnered both Atlantic 10 Conference second team and all-rookie honors.
Fisher, meanwhile, was ranked No. 51 on the list after recording six goals and an assist for 13 points during his rookie campaign. He registered a team-high three game-winning goals for the Rams on his way to receiving A-10 All-Rookie honors.
VCU, which qualified for the NCAA Tournament this year for the first time since 2004, received an at-large bid and was one of 16 teams to earn a national seed and first round bye. The Rams won 12 matches, the most since 2007, and finished the season ranked No. 25.
