TAMPA, Fla. – Most college students spend the first few weeks of summer trying to relax and catch up with some old friends.
Rising sophomore Assane Keita of the VCU men's soccer team is not in the majority as he has spent that time working on his skills with the Fredericksburg Hot Spur of the PDL League. His hard work paid off with a spot on the PDL National Team of the Week.
The PDL is made up of over 70 squads across North America, playing in nine different divisions, featuring some of the best young players across the continent.
Keita has helped lead the Hotspur to an impressive 3-0-1 start including two wins this past weekend over the Carolina Dynamo and the Palmetto FC Bantams.
The Dakar, Senegal native led the Fredericksburg backline, which allowed just one goal and nine shots on goal all weekend. Keita played all 180 minutes for the Hotspur.
"Assane was just amazing on our backline all weekend long," Fredericksburg Head Coach Grover Gibson said. "He was making his debut with us this weekend and he was just phenomenal in all aspects."
For the Rams last year, Keita started the final 11 games on the backline, helping VCU post five shutouts in his 13 games played.
