RICHMOND, Va. – Before even playing a game for the VCU men's soccer team, rising freshman Dennis Castillo is making news for the Black & Gold.
Instead of spending his summer relaxing like most college students, Castillo will be assisting the Costa Rica U-20 National Team in its attempt to qualify for the 2013 CONCACAF Championship. The San Jose, Costa Rica native was called up to the squad for three matches in late July.
"We are all very excited for Dennis, he joined us this January and has worked hard to improve himself both physically and mentally," Head Coach Dave Giffard said. "I think he has made tremendous gains and the progress couldn't have come at a better time for his national team career. Dennis is going in to try and fight for a spot on the team, and I'm sure he will show well."
Costa Rica is in a group with Honduras and Nicaragua with play beginning on July 17 in Honduras. The top two teams in that group will qualify for the 2013 CONCACAF Championship in Mexico next February.
Castillo is a highly-touted defender that joined VCU for the spring season and immediately impressed the coaching staff with his play at the center back position.
The youngster is one of six new Rams that will be joining the program this upcoming fall.
