RAMS NOTCH VICTORIES OVER VMI AND WAKE FOREST ON SATURDAY AT SPORTS BACKERS

RICHMOND, Va. – The VCU Men's Soccer team added a pair of victories to its spring campaign, defeating visiting VMI and Wake Forest in a pair of matches played on Saturday at Sports Backers Stadium.

"It was nice to get two results today against two good teams in VMI and Wake Forest," said VCU head coach Dave Giffard. "I thought today we were further along than we were two weeks ago against Maryland, but not where we need to be yet. I was proud of our guys for finding a way to win the game tonight (against Wake) after going down a goal. We are at the point in our development as a team where we have to go into games against good teams expecting to win and then doing the little things that are necessary to get results against those good teams."

In the first game of the day between VMI and VCU, the Black and Gold recorded a 2-0 victory. VCU forward Kharlton Belmar provided the game's first goal off an assist from fellow forward Daniel Haehre. The second goal against the Keydets came off the foot of defender Isaac Owusu.

Goalkeeper Clark Hankins started the contest against VMI, before giving way to Garrett Cyprus.

In the nightcap against Wake Forest, the Rams surrender the first goal of the game, before coming back with two goals in the 2-1 victory over the Demon Deacons.

The first tally of the game from VCU came off the foot of forward Jason Johnson, who recorded the goal off an assist from midfielder Jose Carlos Castillo. The Rams pulled ahead for good with a goal from forward Yoram Mwila, who accepted a pass from Johnson before burying the attempt in the Wake Forest goal.

Goalkeeper Andrew Wells played the full 90 minutes for the Rams in this evening's match.

"We'll have a strong week of training to get ready for our next test this weekend in South Carolina," added Giffard.

The Rams will compete in three matches next Saturday in Rock Hill, S.C., taking on Queens College, Davidson College and Furman University. VCU will battle Queens College at 9:30 a.m., before taking on Davidson at 12:30 p.m. The Rams will close out the day with a 5:30 match against Furman.
