RICHMOND, Va. – Virginia Commonwealth University senior forward Jake Van Yahres was named Colonial Athletic Association Men's Soccer Player of the Week following his performance in a pair of road wins last week.
Van Yahres tallied a goal and an assist to lead the Rams to CAA victories against Georgia State and George Mason. He scored the game-winning goal in the 83rd minute Saturday to give VCU a 1-0 win at Mason and also assisted on a goal by freshman Jason Johnson in the 87th minute of VCU's win at GSU last Wednesday.
The Charlottesville, Va., native, who has two goals and two assists this season, helped VCU extend its league-leading unbeaten streak to eight matches. With a pair of wins last week, VCU moved to the top of the CAA standings with seven points and is one of three unbeaten teams in the conference.
Seven CAA squads are ranked in the top 10 in this week's NSCAA/HendrickCars.com South Atlantic regional poll, including VCU at No. 9. The Rams are also ranked 24th in the latest Goal.com collegiate men's soccer poll.
VCU returns to Sports Backers Stadium for a pair of home matches this week beginning with a 7 p.m., contest against CAA rival Old Dominion on Wednesday, Oct. 6. The Rams then host Hofstra on Saturday, Oct. 9 with kickoff set for 7 p.m.
