VCU ALUMNI TEAM ADVANCES TO TBT ‘SUPER 16’

RICHMOND, Va. – Ram Nation, a team comprised primarily of VCU Basketball alumni, earned a pair of victories over the weekend at the E.J. Wade Arena at the Siegel Center to advance to the "Super 16" of The Basketball Tournament (TBT) for the second straight summer.

Led by former VCU standouts Brandon Rozzell, who averaged 18.5 points in two games, and Eric Maynor, who dished out 15 assists with just two turnovers, Ram Nation booked a Super 16 date with Team DRC on July 28 at the Georgia State Sports Arena in Atlanta, Ga. Team DRC is led by former NBA First Round Draft pick Dominique Jones.

A raucous, TBT-record crowd of nearly 3,000 saw Ram Nation dispatch Tampa 20/20 by an 86-72 margin Saturday. Rozzell, one of the catalysts of VCU's 2011 Final Four team, poured in 21 points and knocked down six 3-pointers in that contest. Melvin Johnson, an All-Atlantic 10 Conference First Team selection for VCU in 2016, added 10 points, including the game-clinching bucket, for Ram Nation.

Rozzell stayed hot Sunday against Atlanta Dirty South. The Highland Springs native knocked down 6-of-9 from the field on the way to a 16-point performance as Ram Nation held off Atlanta 76-71. Maynor, VCU's career scoring leader, provided eight assists and zero turnovers, while Bradford Burgess, another member of VCU's Final Four squad, added nine points and seven rebounds. Richmond native and VMI graduate Reggie Williams led Ram Nation, the No. 2 seed in the South Region, with 20 points.

Ram Nation, participating in the TBT for the third straight year, reached the quarterfinal round in 2017 before falling to three-time defending champions Overseas Elite. The Ram Nation team also features VCU graduates Jordan Burgess, B.A. Walker, Jamal Shuler, Darius Theus, Jesse Pellot-Rosa and Juvonte Reddic. Mo Alie-Cox, one of the best shot-blockers in school history, is a booster for the team, while current VCU Video Coordinator Justin Levine serves as coach.

Now in its fifth year, the TBT is a 72-team tournament that features a $2 million, winner-take-all prize.
