RICHMOND, Va. – Melvin Johnson, VCU's career leader in 3-point field goals, will continue his basketball career in Italy.
The Bronx, New York native has signed a professional contract with Pallacanestro Varese in Italy's Serie A league. Varese finished 14-16 last season. Johnson led VCU in scoring in 2015-16 at 17.4 points per game and was named All-Atlantic 10 First Team for his efforts.
Johnson worked out for a number of NBA teams in the run-up to the league's draft and most recently played for the Houston Rockets in the association's Las Vegas Summer League.
A 6-foot-4, 190-pound shooting guard, Johnson ranks sixth in VCU history with 1,657 points and first on the program's all-time list with 285 three-pointers. He knocked down 110 treys this season, second most in school single-season history.
Johnson is the second Ram this summer to ink a pro deal. Teammate Korey Billbury also agreed to terms with an Italian club, U.S. Basket Recanati on July 11. He is the 25th VCU Men's Basketball player to sign a pro contract since the conclusion of the 2003-04 season.
